First Blog Post: Making Marmalade

The work/art of making marmalade

This weekend the weather and the Irish 2020 Election confined us to the indoors. We busied ourselves with the usual domestic chores. But we made some yummy marmalade

Orange Peel
Orange peel adds colour and flavour to the marmalade.

First Steps

You need Seville oranges these are the key ingredient for delicious, tangy marmalade. These oranges differ to the normal eating oranges. Thanks to the thick, bitter rind of the Seville orange, there is naturally enough pectin in the fruit to set the conserve.

Marmalade is a fruit preserve made from the juice and peel of citrus fruits boiled with sugar and water.

Assemble the ingredients, containers and tools.

Find a good recipe. There are many. We used one from Darina Allens Book "Ballymaloe Cookery Course: Revised Edition" link here.

Here is another article on the subject.

Its great fun

Take your time. My wife and I spent the day while working on our marmalade with the radio on on in the background, listening to the Election commentaries.

Our preferred government parties may not be going to win the election, but we will have lovely marmalade for our toast.
