Setting seeds

Its February 22nd and the day has come to begin gardening for the year ahead. Time to plant some of the seeds for the year ahead. Growing plants from seed is a great way to start gardening early in the season. We purchase seeds from different sources online and from local and garden centres shops but particular attention is paid to some of the seeds which were diligently harvested from some of our own plants at the end of the last growing season such as these Sweet Peas.

With the right light and some simple equipment (some seed trays and compost), it's easy to grow from seed to harvest. Once the seeds are set they do have to be monitored for water, light and heat and nature does the rest – germination.

The goal with seed setting is to have seedlings (young plants) ready to go outside when the weather is more favourable, and the young plants will hopefully survive and grow on.

Seeds planted today included, for eating

  • Aubergines (eggplants) are popular vegetables to grow at home. Sunshine and warm growing conditions are the key to success. Seed is sown early in the year

  • A few tomato plants - especially easy to start indoors (pictured just below)

  • Some pepper plants

Flowering plants sown today included

  • Antirrhinum is a genus of plants commonly known as dragon flowers or snapdragons. Snapdragons can be grown from seed sown early (now) indoors and transplanted outside after frost.

  • Sweet Peas are a popular garden climbing flower, popular for their lovely little flowers and gorgeous scent. We tie them to a border fence they form an impressive column of fragrant, summer colour. They are easy to grow and excellent for cut flowers, the more you pick the more they’ll grow. These seeds benefit from being ‘softened’ in a piece of wet tissue to soften the seed shell

We purchased a few plant propagators (trays) in a local low-cost supermarket a small outlay €4.99 for four trays. Its a good idea to label what you have sown.
