Spring 2021 new polytunnel

Updated: Apr 29, 2021

Hi again. Apologies for not had a post on this for a long while. The Winter set in and most gardening activities ceased. We are back, and back with a bang!

Big news, we bought a polytunnel. No more our little green plastic greenhouses which in fairness served us well and gave us a good indication of what we could do. During the last season we spoke about and decided to purchase a proper polytunnel. We priced the job with a number of polytunnel companies and eventually decided to purchase from Polytunnels Direct in Navan they were very agreeable to do business with and provided a friendly, prompt and efficient service. On Monday the 1st February the tunnel arrived. Eddie our supplier had given us an indication of when it would be delivered and erected, then we got a couple of days’ notice of an anticipated break in the weather which would allow its construction, wind is the primary concern when assembling a tunnel the other concerns are any nearby sharp obstacles such as barbed wire or a boundary fence with loose wires or a stone wall the guys did spent time checking a boundary fence on our site and I covered the stone wall on the other side with tarp.

When the construction day came and the truck pulled up outside we helped the lads unload the components to the site and then left the job to the professionals. In four hours three men completed the task. A ten meter by four meter polytunnel is now in our garden waiting to be worked with and filled with plants, fruit and vegetables . We are really excited for the summer ahead.

I now have further work to do, we decided to do the internal raised bed timbers ourselves. We also have the tidy up an outside edging path and surround to discourage scutch grass and weed growth. Since Christmas and certainly after confirming our order for the tunnel, my lovely wife began germinating seeds so we would have plants ready to go into it.

Today we moved some of these plants into the new tunnel. We have garlic, peas, ‘little gem’ lettuce, mizuna, rocket and some flowers ranunculus, sweetpeas and anemones. These are a Spring flowers which will bloom to end April/May but would be damaged in frost if left outside. These will be covered with fleece for protection.
