Still Transplanting

Though we have a lot of plants planted, there are still a lot of little seedling trays, pots, egg boxes and half milk containers full of seedlings out in the nursery (our conservatory).

In breaks between the showers my wife disappears out of sight, usually with a watering bottle or a tray of seedlings. Yesterday she transplanted some carrots, I was told not to publish this as seemingly its gardening sacrilege to start carrot seeds indoors, though I don't see why the little carrots shouldn't get the best start in life.

Yesterday, these little seedlings have been let loose in a carefully prepared 'bed' of compost, soil with the stones removed and finally some peat. Carrots don't like stones. They grow down, if they meet a stone they grow around it, ending up with a bit if a turn or a bend and not rifle straight.

Seemingly, carrots should be straight. This was the reason for the removal of stones.

When we traveled to Kerry as a child we always brought carrots home from Castlegregory, straight carrots grown in sandy Kerry soil. Not a stone in sight down there, as a result the straightest carrots in Ireland!

Here are some images of our little carrot seedlings.
