Things are progressing

Seeds can be grown in almost any old thing an old cup or jar, pretty much any clean container. Some even use empty cardboard toilet rolls! We bought seed trays, they are reusable and are very inexpensive. They have the advantage that they are moulded/designed as individual pots, a tray to catch/hold water underneath and often come with a clear plastic cover to form a mini ecosystem for the seeds to germinate.

We initially planted each ‘pot’ with three or four seeds. Now they are beginning to pop up as you will see in the pictures. We decided to begin ‘picking out’ /transplanting the little tiny seedlings into individual pots to allow them to grow on. This is advantageous to the plants as the little roots don’t get entwined under the soil.

As the pictures show this is a delicate but easy process with these seedlings, tomatoes and Chili Peppers as they are quite big

It is a much more tedious and delicate process with some plants such as the antirrhinums we have planted, a magnifying glass and a pin might be required. Some flowers such as Lobelias can be separated into small clumps.

The plant root system makes up a major part of the plant body, both in terms of function and bulk. In plants, the root system is the underground part of the plant body while the shoot is the above ground part. Roots are branching organs which grow downward into the soil.

The first root that comes from a plant is called the Radicle. This is very delicate and must be handled carefully, taking care to bring soil with it.

The four main functions of the root of a plant

are

  1. Absorption of water and inorganic nutrients

  2. Anchoring of the plant body to the ground, and supporting it

  3. Storage of food and nutrients

  4. moving water and minerals to the stem.
